It seems the Hôtel Plaza Athénée could never exist in any other city but Paris for it truly embodies the spirit of the ancient city. Located amongst the haute couture houses near the Seine on Avenue Montaigne, it is a haven of rare elegance. A celebration of the city, the exclusive Hôtel Plaza Athénée is in perfect sync with the heartbeat of Europe’s most romantic – and luxurious – city.

Red awnings and tumbling scarlet geraniums are a signature of The Plaza Athénée, a Paris palace hotel that, after a 200 million euro makeover, has truly earned the “palace” title. A cleverly designed, thorough modernisation has catapulted it into the 21st century while retaining and enhancing the luxury hotel’s traditional and historic character.

Situated on the chic Avenue Montaigne, surrounded by Parisian haute couture stores, next door to the fashionable Champs Elysée Theatre and just across the river Seine from the Eiffel Tower, the Plaza Athénée first opened in 1913. It now boasts three top eateries overseen by the illustrious multi-Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse.

The guest rooms and apartments have had a facelift by the top interior decorator Marie-José Pommereau. The hotel now has 154 rooms and 54 suites, all freshly decorated in subtle hues, with elegant silks, damasks and rich embroideries from top couture houses embellishing windows and furnishings. The bedding is in luxurious 300-thread count cotton, by the Italian bespoke textile designer house Beltrami.

Privacy and Intimacy are an important part of the hotel’s appeal. Suites are accessed by a private lift. Service is efficient and discreet with attention paid to the smallest detail. The general manager, Francois Delahaye, formerly butler to the Duke of Westminster, heads a staff dedicated to making his guests feel at home, though it’s a home with a difference, where room-service breakfast may be served at a table with a full-on view of the Eiffel Tower. There are 15 rooms and suites with an Eiffel Tower view and many others with views of the famous Paris landmark from their balconies.

Alternatively, breakfast can be taken in the three-Michelin-starred main restaurant facing the hotel lobby — one way to experience the luminescent decor of the room without a hard-to-get lunch or dinner reservation.  Here, the designers Patrick Join and Sanjit Manku have used the know how of French craftsmen to create a singular environment in which sparkling incandescent chandeliers are reflected in curvaceous stainless steel armchair pods. In the evenings the setting changes. The back wall folds back to reveal to the diners a recess lined with an eclectic collection of fine dining objects in silver and crystal by the likes of Christofle and Cristalleries Saint-Louis.

Alain Ducasse serves a thoroughly modern cuisine where cereals and pulses mix with grains and seafood. The menu is fish and vegetable-based, serving greens sourced from the organic garden of the Chateau de Versailles on the outskirts of Paris.

For an alternative, more accessible, culinary adventure, Japanese guest chef Fumiko Kono is currently offering a Bento-styled fusion menu in the hotel’s open-air courtyard restaurant, an ideal destination for a quiet lunch on a hot summer’s day. Surrounded by abundant foliage and cascading geraniums in the summer, the courtyard transforms in the winter into an ice rink.

The hotel brasserie, one of the neighbourhood’s favourite lunchtime meeting places, has kept a cosy 1930s vibe, including its fabulous art deco murals, but the Plaza Athenée bar, renowned for its cocktails, has been revamped with a new, modernist look. The ceiling is covered with a Klein-blue folded fabric canopy, in a nod to the Avenue Montaigne’s famous couture houses. Cocktails meanwhile now come served in glasses styled like Starbucks coffee containers, designed to appeal to a younger, trendier clientele — a touch of insouciance that might leave Commander James Bond both shaken and stirred.
