From Plastic Waste to Eco Fabric

While the image of eco fabric may be is formed by rolls of hemp, linen, and organically grown cotton, there is another player in textiles that can save the day: recycled polyester.

People instinctually don’t like synthetics because its test-tube origins don’t carry the emotional resonance that natural fibers do. Funnily, while the ongoing ‘natural vs. synthetic’ debate goes louder every year, in reality, man-made fibers had already long but conquered the textile industry—more than 60% of global fabric production is synthetic and polyester reisns.

If you’d start looking at the labels, it won’t take long to discover that most of your favorite fabrics and garments are actually made of polyester: a soft touch of fleece that warms you during outdoor adventures or the efficiency of sportswear you choose for working out. Even if the clothing item looks like cotton or wool, nowadays, it’s mostly a combination of 55% poly and other fabric to create a better blend.

But what can possibly make polyester, a fabric originating from non-renewable petroleum resources, a green choice? Well, thanks to technology advancement, now we can recycle plastic that would have gone wasted into that same most popular fabric. Recycled poly not only offers a solution to the outrageous plastic pollution problem we’ve created, it does so with style. This recycled fabric has a longer lifecycle, saving resources over and over along the consumption loop, but you won’t guess in a hundred years, that soft textile, which drapes beautifully and feels good used to be a plastic bottle.

So yes, polyester received a sustainable upgrade and is on the way to conquer high fashion even: already Livia Firth and Emma Watson pull off the red carpet look in dresses made of plastic. Sustainability is a new fashion statement.
