Calder’s Works as Meant by the Artist

Hypermobility exhibition on the view in Whitney Museum until October 23rd
 
Many artists made contour line drawings on paper, but Calder was the first, who in the early 1930s, invented an entirely new mode of art. He used wire to create three-dimensional line ‘drawings’ of people, animals, and objects and then shifted from figurative linear sculptures to abstract forms in motion. Mobiles operate in highly sophisticated ways and for the first time, a museum decided to undertake its very complex approach to present Calder’s works as intended by the artist. Each piece with its own motion, some with sound—-they create unique experiences for the viewers. 
 
In addition, with the support of the Calder Foundation, the museum will host a series of performances and events around the exhibition.
